Union Social Club marks 25 years with call for stronger brotherhood and national impact

The Union Social Club has marked its 25th anniversary with a public lecture exploring the role of friendship, social clubs and voluntary associations in Ghana’s development.

The lecture, held on Friday, August 14, was themed “Brotherhood and Nationhood: Social Clubs in Ghana’s Development.”

It brought together members of the Union, dignitaries and members of the public to reflect on how social clubs can move beyond fellowship and make a meaningful contribution to national development.

The event was chaired by Emeritus Professor Ivan Addae-Mensah, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, while Senior Partner at Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa & Ankomah (BELA), Lawyer Ace Anan Ankomah, delivered the keynote address.

The discussions centred on the potential of voluntary associations and social clubs to contribute to Ghana’s civic and national life, drawing on the Union’s philosophy of friendship and impact.

From friendship to impact

For the Union, the 25th anniversary represents more than a milestone.

It is a celebration of a friendship that has endured for a quarter of a century, while also providing an opportunity for members to reflect on the legacy they want to leave behind.

President of the Union, Dr Isaac Adupong, said the organisation began 25 years ago as a small circle of friends united by a belief in the enduring power of brotherhood.

“Twenty-five years ago, a small circle of friendship was formed on the belief that brotherhood could outlast any season,” he said.

According to him, the journey has demonstrated what can be achieved when individuals commit themselves not only to one another but also to the broader interests of society.

“Today, that same brotherhood stands as a reminder of what is possible when men commit not only to each other, but to the nation we all serve,” Dr Adupong added.

Measuring fellowship by impact

The Union President said the anniversary lecture was also intended to encourage members to rethink what it means to belong to a social organisation.

He noted that the true value of a fellowship should not be measured simply by how long it survives, but by the positive difference it makes in society.

“This lecture is our way of honouring that journey, and of reminding ourselves that the true measure of any fellowship is not how long it lasts, but how much impact it leaves behind,” he said.

The 25th anniversary celebrations therefore seek to position the Union’s experience as a broader reflection on the role of social networks and voluntary organisations in strengthening Ghanaian society.

The anniversary comes as the Union looks beyond its history of friendship and fellowship to consider how such bonds can be translated into lasting social and national impact.
