The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a GH¢9.5 million financial and incentive package for clubs ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.

The announcement was made by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku during the Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Thursday, August 20.

As part of the package, each of the 18 Premier League clubs will receive GH¢1 million, while the league champions will receive GH¢3 million in prize money.

The financial package is expected to give the clubs additional support as they prepare for the new season and seek to improve their operations and competitiveness.

The GFA also recognised Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as the Black Stars’ Best Domestic Player following his performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Asare was the only Ghana Premier League player included in Ghana’s World Cup squad. He featured in three of the Black Stars’ four matches and kept a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against England.

For his achievement, Asare will receive a new vehicle valued at US$38,000.

Meanwhile, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has called on stakeholders in Ghanaian football to go beyond financial support and work towards rebuilding the domestic game.

Speaking at the Congress, Adams said Ghana has the talent, history, clubs, supporters and corporate sector required to develop a stronger football industry, but believes the country is not making enough use of these resources.

He called for a deliberate effort to rebuild the sport by improving player development, strengthening clubs and making the Premier League more attractive to supporters.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of developing recognisable stars who can help promote the league. He referenced former Premier League players including Charles Taylor, Stephen Oduro and Don Bortey, who helped generate strong interest and rivalries during their playing careers.

Adams further cautioned football stakeholders against taking supporters for granted, particularly as the Ghana Premier League competes for attention with the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and a growing range of digital entertainment platforms.

The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League is scheduled to kick off on September 5, 2026, with 18 clubs competing for the league title and the increased financial rewards.
