Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, former Anyaa-Sowutuom Member of Parliament has called on political leaders to prioritise competence and professional expertise when making appointments to key government positions.
He said appointing people with relevant knowledge and experience is critical to ensuring that government institutions and sectors are effectively managed.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr, Dr Adomako Kissi said Ghana could benefit significantly when people appointed to public offices have a strong understanding of the sectors they are expected to oversee.
He cited the importance of having professionals lead sectors where technical knowledge is required, arguing that such individuals are better positioned to understand the challenges and make informed decisions.
The former MP pointed to the experience of professionals who have occupied ministerial positions and said their contributions often demonstrate the value of sector-specific expertise in government.
“When they spoke on the matters, you felt that they had some authority on those topics. And it is helping us as a nation,” he said.
He therefore urged political parties and governments to look beyond political considerations when selecting people for public appointments.
“When you are appointing, give me an ordinary Ghanaian, somebody who at least has some know-how,” he said.
Dr Adomako Kissi stressed that the issue should not be about party affiliation but about ensuring that people with the appropriate knowledge and competence are given the opportunity to serve.
He also argued that professionals should themselves be willing to enter politics, since government policies can have direct consequences on their professions and the people they serve.
“Greater participation by professionals in politics would not only improve the quality of appointments but could also contribute to better policymaking and help change Ghana’s political narrative”. he maintained
