The Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Ernest Yaw Anim, has urged parents and guardians to take a more active role in the education and emotional wellbeing of their children.
According to him, parents must not leave the responsibility of raising and supporting their children entirely to schools and teachers.
Speaking during a ceremony to support 500 BECE candidates in the district with items for their transition to senior high school, Mr Anim expressed concern that some parents rarely visited their children in school or attended Parent-Teacher Association meetings.
He urged parents to make time to visit their wards, monitor their academic performance and ensure that they had the educational materials and other basic necessities required for their studies.
The MP stressed that children needed more than financial support to succeed, noting that emotional care, encouragement and parental attention were equally important.
He said some students could be emotionally affected when they felt neglected or lacked adequate parental support.
Mr Anim said measures were being put in place to strengthen emotional and parental support for children in the district.
He described young people as the future leaders of the country and said they must be given the necessary support to realise their full potential.
He also encouraged parents to complement the efforts of stakeholders by providing guidance, discipline and encouragement to their children throughout their education.
The MP pledged to visit beneficiaries of his educational support programme at their respective senior high schools to monitor their progress and motivate them to remain focused.
Parents who benefited from the initiative commended Mr Anim for his continued support and pledged to take greater responsibility for the academic and emotional wellbeing of their children.
