President John Dramani Mahama says the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway will significantly reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi, with motorists potentially completing the journey in about two hours.
Speaking at Kwaso in the Ashanti Region on Monday, September 14, during the formal handover of the cleared right-of-way, President Mahama said the new route would be shorter than the existing Accra-Kumasi Highway.
“The old alignment, the Accra-Kumasi Highway, is 270 kilometers from Accra to Kumasi. So it means that with 198.7 kilometers, we’ve shaved off almost 70 kilometers of the traveling distance between Accra and Kumasi.”
He said the expressway would have a recommended speed of 120 kilometres per hour, allowing motorists to cover the shorter distance much faster.
“Even if he is traveling at 100 kilometers an hour, it means that the journey will take him two hours instead of the five to six hours that we currently use on the old Accra-Kumasi highway.”
The proposed road will cover 198.7 kilometres and have six lanes, forming part of the government’s flagship Big Push infrastructure programme.
The project is expected to strengthen the transport corridor linking Greater Accra, the Eastern Region and Kumasi, while improving the movement of passengers and goods.
A major preparatory phase has already been completed, with the Ghana Armed Forces clearing 175.6 kilometres of the right-of-way in 19 weeks.
The exercise was completed one week ahead of the 20-week deadline, paving the way for the project to advance towards detailed design, procurement and construction.
