Security analyst Adib Saani has described the NPP’s recent internal elections as largely peaceful despite some minor incidents of disorder recorded at the venue.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Adib Saani said while videos circulating on social media showed instances of pushing and struggles, particularly around the entrance of the stadium, there was no serious confrontation that escalated into violence.
He noted that one of the incidents involved an MP who was seen in a video attempting to force his way through a security check as the Minority Leader arrived at the venue.
“It’s true, just that there was just an extent, not entirely, a degree of disorderliness,” he said.
“I saw some videos making rounds on social media showing some struggles and pushing, especially when the Minority Leader was coming in. I saw a video of the MP trying to force his way through a security check at the entrance into the stadium,” he added.
However, Adib Saani stressed that the incidents did not undermine the overall peaceful nature of the electoral process.
“But generally, serious confrontation that led to violence… It was generally a peaceful process,” he said.
According to him, the outcome represents an improvement in the NPP’s internal electoral processes compared with previous years.
“I think it is a massive improvement in the internal election processes of the NPP,” he said.
He expressed the hope that the party would learn from the exercise and apply the lessons as it prepares for its national elections in December.
“And I do hope that the NPP will learn from it as they go into their national elections in December and perhaps, who knows, do better,” he added.
Abdi Saani further commended the security measures deployed for the exercise, noting that political events can present security challenges because of the presence of supporters of competing candidates.
“The measures put in place around and within the venue helped prevent the minor incidents recorded from escalating into serious confrontations”. He said.
