Mahdi Gibrill urges aspirants to avoid billboards in internal elections

Mahdi Gibrill urges aspirants to prioritise direct engagement with delegates over expensive outdoor advertising.

Acting Director of IT and Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mahdi Gibrill has urged aspirants contesting the party’s internal elections to avoid mounting billboards, arguing that the practice could lead to unnecessary expenditure in contests where candidates already know the delegates they need to reach.

He said aspirants should be more strategic in deploying their campaign resources by prioritising direct engagement with delegates instead of spending on outdoor advertisements that may have limited impact on the outcome of internal elections.

Speaking to Arafat Musah on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mahdi Gibrill said the party’s internal elections involve a defined group of delegates whom aspirants can identify and approach, making extensive outdoor advertising less necessary.

“You know where the delegates are. Twenty-eight executives at the constituency level, you meet them at their point. So what’s the essence and the impact of the billboard that you have on the Accra-Tema motorway?” he asked.

Mr Mahdi said the party had already issued a directive discouraging aspirants from mounting billboards and had taken steps to reduce their size as part of efforts to limit unnecessary expenditure during the internal electoral process.

He questioned the need for aspirants to spend heavily on publicity when their campaigns are directed at specific delegates rather than the general public.

He maintained that aspirants should be mindful of the resources they commit to internal contests, noting that the party would need to unite and prepare for the general elections after completing its internal electoral processes.

He urged party members to keep the internal elections focused on their purpose and avoid allowing the contests to become unnecessarily expensive, stressing that the bigger political challenge lies ahead.
