AMPF–MiM 2026 Summit to focus on Africa’s mineral value capture

The October 19–21 summit in Accra will explore strategies to expand local mineral processing, strengthen regional cooperation and increase Africa’s share of global mineral value chains.

The African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion (AMPF MiM) 2026 will bring together African policymakers, regulators, mining companies and investors in Accra to discuss strategies for increasing the continent’s share of the economic value generated from its mineral resources.

The summit, scheduled for October 19 to 21 at Destiny Arena in Accra, will be held under the theme, “One Continent. One Voice on Minerals. Aligning Africa’s Mineral Wealth Future.”

Organisers say the theme reflects the need for stronger cooperation among African mineral-producing countries to address fragmented policies, inadequate processing capacity and infrastructure gaps that limit the continent’s ability to benefit fully from its mineral wealth.

Africa holds approximately 30 per cent of the world’s critical mineral reserves and produces more than 25 per cent of global annual gold output. However, limited domestic refining and processing capacity continue to constrain the economic benefits the continent derives from these resources.

According to the organisers, Africa holds roughly 40 per cent of the world’s gold reserves but captures less than seven per cent of the total value generated across the gold processing and refining chain.

The continent also holds more than 50 per cent of global cobalt reserves, nearly 48 per cent of manganese reserves, 90 per cent of platinum group metals and more than 21 per cent of natural graphite.

Despite these substantial deposits, domestic processing of advanced critical materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt remains below five per cent, leaving African countries with limited opportunities to capture value beyond extraction and raw mineral exports.

The summit will seek to address these challenges by examining how African countries can align their policies, develop shared infrastructure, coordinate investment frameworks and strengthen regional processing and refining capacity.

From mineral competition to regional cooperation

AMPF MiM 2026 will build on the objectives of the Africa Mining Vision, which promotes the transparent, equitable and optimal exploitation of the continent’s mineral resources to support sustainable economic growth and socio-economic development.

The forum will explore ways to strengthen cooperation across the mining value chain, from exploration and extraction to processing, refining, manufacturing and trade.

Organisers say the focus is to move beyond increasing mineral production towards establishing competitive regional value chains that allow African countries to retain a greater share of the economic benefits generated by their resources.

The discussions come as governments seek to strengthen local beneficiation and improve their positions in global mineral supply chains amid growing demand for critical minerals.

Ghana to host African mining stakeholders

Ghana’s position as a leading African gold producer makes Accra a strategic location for discussions on mineral policy coordination and value addition.

The country is pursuing measures to strengthen domestic participation in the gold value chain, while mineral-producing countries across Africa are exploring opportunities for cooperation in processing, strategic reserves, infrastructure development and market access.

The organisers believe stronger regional coordination could improve Africa’s negotiating position in global mineral markets and create opportunities for industrialisation across the continent.

Organised by the Ashanti Green Initiative in partnership with the African Union, the three-day summit will feature high-level ministerial panels, project and policy showcases, and networking opportunities for policymakers, industry leaders, investors and international partners.

The event is expected to provide a platform for participants to examine shared challenges and develop partnerships aimed at advancing a more coordinated approach to mineral development.

AMPF MiM seeks to promote a shift from the export of raw mineral resources towards regional processing, manufacturing and other value-added activities to ensure African countries benefit more substantially from their mineral wealth.
