Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has expressed deep sorrow following the death of a National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) officer in a fatal accident late Wednesday in the Obuasi Municipality. Four other officers were critically injured.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Dr. Amoakohene described the incident as a “tragic loss” and extended sympathies to the bereaved family. He said the death was “a loss to the region” and assured the family of the government’s support during this difficult period.
He noted that the three injured officers initially reported were receiving “the best possible medical attention,” with regional authorities working closely with relevant agencies.
Updated reports from security sources later confirmed that four officers were in critical condition and had been transferred from the Obuasi Government Hospital to the Anglogold Obuasi Hospital for advanced treatment.
The officers were returning from an anti-galamsey operation at a mining concession in Anyankyerim, a site recently overrun by illegal miners, when their vehicle somersaulted along the stretch between the community and the Airport Road.
Dr. Amoakohene said a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and to inform future safety measures.
He added that “the safety and well-being of all personnel engaged in national assignments remain a priority,” noting that the region stands in solidarity with the affected officers, their families, and the entire NAIMOS taskforce.
