The former Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala East, Amidu Chinnia, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to consider amending the ‘supposed’ legal “loopholes” in the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP) Act instead of abolishing the institution.
Speaking on GH Today on GHOne TV on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Mr. Chinnia challenged political actors who have expressed dissatisfaction with the OSP’s current legal framework, reminding them of the fundamental role of the legislature.
He emphasized that it is the duty of Parliament to refine laws after passing same if their implementation reveals practical challenges.
“Why do we make changes to laws?” Normally…you pass a legislation, with time yourself you begin to find problems with its implementation. There will be shortfalls,” he said.
He maintained that “if there are genuine weaknesses in the law governing the OSP, the appropriate response is to make amendments to make sure that the law works well.”
The former Lawmaker further criticized the NDC for engaging in coordinated moves to “cancel the whole OSP law”.
He referenced past instances where the “Majority Leader and the Chief Whip” and a comment by the National Chairman of the NDC labelling the OSP as ‘useless’ as the basis of his claim.
According to Chinnia, it took the intervention of the President—prompted by pressure from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)—to stop the MPs from moving ahead with plans to scrap the anti-corruption body.
He insisted the cancellation of the OSP Act is never the way forward insisting “you don’t fight to…cancel the law; you make amendments to the law.”
