The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, Emelia Arthur has called on the Mineral Commission to with a matter of urgency review of how explosives are handled at Shama in the Western region.
Reports reaching Empire News indicate that five persons have died over an explosion that occurred at Omni quarry at Kobina Ano Krom-Shama in Western region.
The incident happened Saturday September 9, 2023 evening as some of the explosives were left undetonated and it later detonated after it was triggered and splitting apart many workers on night duty.
In a statement the NDC aspiring MP stated that expressed worry of the situation in the area.
“My heart goes out to all the victims and their families. Our first response should be a show of solidarity by Shama. I call on all our institutions – Traditional Authorities, District Assembly, NADMO, religious bodies, and ordinary citizens to step up and be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.
“This tragedy however raises issues that require a national response. I know as a former DCE how desperately under-resourced agencies like the Minerals Commission and the Inspectorate of Mines are on the ground,” the aspiring parliamentary candidate stated.
He continued: “We however need an immediate review of the Anto-Aboso incident and the handling of explosives and other dangerous materials in all quarry sites in Shama. Immediate answers are required.”
