Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has clarified that Parliament has approved private sector participation in the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) distribution operations to enhance revenue collection and improve efficiency, not to sell the utility.
Speaking on day two of the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 16, Mr. Jinapor firmly denied claims suggesting the government intends to privatize ECG.
“To ensure that we increase revenue and improve efficiency, the cabinet has approved private sector participation in ECG’s distribution network and let me put it on record again that we are not selling ECG. What we are seeking to do is involve the private sector, particularly in the billing and collection segment.”
He encouraged Ghanaian entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunity.
“We have good Ghanaian businessmen, and this is an opportunity for you, get involved andhelp us to bring improvement to the sector,” he added.
Mr. Jinapor’s remarks come in response to public and civil society concerns that ongoing reforms might lead to a covert privatisation of the state utility company.
He reassured the public that the government’s intention is to strengthen, not sell, ECG, and called for support to ensure better service delivery nationwide through improved performance and revenue generation.
