The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has announced a nationwide strike that will start on Thursday, November 7, 2024, due to ongoing delays in establishing a new salary structure. The strike comes after CLOGSAG reported unmet expectations from the government, despite prior discussions intended to resolve the salary structure and conditions of service for civil and local government employees.
The demand for equitable wages and a structured salary system for civil and local government workers has been a long-standing issue between CLOGSAG and the FWSC. Discussions to implement a new salary structure were initiated earlier this year; however, despite assurances, the timeline has faced repeated delays, leading to this escalation in protest.
In a statement issued to regional secretaries and the media, CLOGSAG expressed its frustration over the halted negotiations, asserting that the process should have been completed by October 31, 2024, and implemented by January 1, 2025. The association stated that the deadline has now become “a mirage.”
CLOGSAG also criticized Mr. Benjamin Arthur, Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salary Commission (FWSC), alleging that he has acted “in bad faith.” As a result, the association has decided to discontinue any further engagement with him regarding this issue.
“Due to the long delay in the completion of a Salary Structure and other Conditions of Service for the Staff of Civil Service and Local Government Service,” the statement read, “CLOGSAG has no other option than to ask our members to stay at home from Thursday, 7th November 2024.”
The association believes this strike is necessary to urge the government to meet its obligations to its members. Under the leadership of Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo, CLOGSAG has called on all members to comply with the directive as they continue to advocate for fair and timely compensation.
