Honorable Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the sitting Member of Parliament for Agona West, has firmly denied reports suggesting she has abandoned her quest to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections. The clarification follows speculations sparked by her appearance with Majority members at Parliament’s Job 600 office on October 22, 2024.
In a statement released by her office, Morrison reaffirmed her commitment to contesting the upcoming elections independently, dismissing rumors of her stepping down as false. “I have not stepped down in my quest to run as an independent candidate. My mission to bring development and ensure the well-being of the people of Agona West remains unwavering,” she declared.
The rumors followed Morrison’s defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries to Christopher Arthur, after which she announced her decision to run as an independent candidate. Her decision led to Speaker Alban Bagbin declaring her seat vacant, along with three other MPs. However, the Supreme Court issued a stay of execution on the Speaker’s decision following an appeal from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, seeking clarification on the MPs’ status.
Morrison has reiterated that her position remains unchanged and encouraged her supporters to stay vigilant against misinformation. “These reports are false and do not reflect my current position or intentions,” she said. She emphasized her commitment to improving the lives of the people of Agona West and continuing her campaign as an independent candidate.
With the 2024 elections approaching, Morrison’s independent candidacy will remain a critical focal point, especially as she advocates for the continued development of her constituency.
