Political Scientist with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Kwesi Amakye has expressed that the Speaker’s decision to indefinitely adjourn parliament will allow parliamentarians space and time to have serious deliberation on pressing issues.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has announced the indefinite adjournment of parliamentary proceedings, a decision made on Tuesday, October 22.
This announcement follows exchanges between lawmakers from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding which caucus holds the Majority.
Speaker Bagbin when announcing the adjournment disclosed that he had received a communication from the Supreme Court directing him to stay his earlier ruling, which had declared four parliamentary seats vacant.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Dr. Amakye stated that adjourning parliament would allow time for meaningful discussions, leading to effective solutions.
“The current position taken is to give them time and space outside the sight of the public so that they can themselves agree to disagree in whatever fashion, but eventually, they are going to come back to tell us that the issues have been resolved, this is the way forward. I think there’s going to be serious engagement between the office of the Speaker (2:58) and that of the, you know, people of or even like the Chief Justice or the Supreme Court. I expect a serious engagement to go on there. Eventually, whatever engagement should lead to a solution”, he stated.
He added that moving forward political parties should learn to play by their rules and respect their own constitution as well as the rights of the members of their party.
