The Eastern Regional Coordinator of School Feeding Program Shirley Naana Osei Ampem has called on caterers to do more to improve the quality of food prepared for the school children in the region.
She said despite significant strides made in the quality and quatity of meals ,there is more room for improvement .
Shirley Naana Osei Ampem said this after visiting several schools to assess the quality of food being served the school children.
Although she was impressed with the commitment of the caterers Shirley Naana Ampem encouraged them to do more to enable the program meets its objectives.
“I’ve spent the past few days moving around schools in the region, quietly observing how meals are being prepared and served under the School Feeding Programme” She said
Shirley Naana Ampem added “It’s been heartwarming to see the dedication of our caterers and the smiles on the faces of the children. There’s still room for improvement, but progress is visible and encouraging.Grateful to everyone playing a part — from the cooks to the school heads and the supporting staff”.
She also announced that the program has been expanded to cover more schools in the region.
The Ghana School Feeding Program (GSFP) which started in 2005 is an initiative of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Program (CAADP) Pillar 3 which seeks to enhance food security and reduce hunger in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on hunger, poverty and malnutrition.
The Immediate objectives of the Programme are to contribute to increase school enrolment, attendance and retention.

Reduce short-term hunger and malnutrition amongst kindergarten and primary school children and boost domestic food production.
The long-term objectives of the programme are to contribute to: Poverty reduction and improving food security. The program targets public basic schools and kindergartens in the country.
