The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), the Fisheries Commission, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), and the Ghana Police Service has launched an urgent investigation following a mass fish mortality event at the Tema Shipyard.
The incident was first detected by security personnel early on Monday, April 6, 2026, between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Dead fish were found concentrated within a 50-meter radius of the shipyard’s main unloading ramp
Authorities in a joint statement released on April 9, 2026 confirmed that the site has been secured and a rapid-response team is on the ground.
They have further directed the public not to harvest, purchase, or consume fish or seafood from the Tema Shipyard or surrounding areas until an “All-Clear” notice is issued, anyone who has consumed fish from the area and experiences symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or skin irritation to seek immediate medical attention and report any sightings of dead or distressed fish to the FDA Hotline at 0551 112 224/5.
