A major fire erupted at the Accra Tourist Information Centre (ATIC) in the early hours of Monday, August 4, destroying parts of the facility located opposite Afrikiko in Cantonments, Accra.
The blaze, which reportedly began around 1:00 a.m., triggered a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
According to officials, the fire was first reported at exactly 01:02 hours, and the initial fire engine from the GNFS National Headquarters arrived within two minutes to confront what had already become a fully developed inferno.
The fire, believed to have possibly originated from the kitchen of Rockz Waakye—a popular food vendor operating within the premises—is yet to be officially linked to a cause.
The GNFS has launched investigations to determine the exact origin.
Reinforcements, including five additional fire appliances from Flagstaff House, Circle, Accra City, and Ministries Fire Stations, as well as a Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV) from Headquarters, were deployed to battle the blaze.
Firefighters worked for more than two hours to contain the flames, finally bringing the fire under control by 03:32 hours. However, mop-up operations and hotspot extinguishment continued well into the morning to prevent any resurgence, with full suppression completed by 06:35 hours.
The entire first floor of the structure was completely destroyed, along with its contents. However, firefighters were able to save the ground floor and approximately eight offices, including sections of the East Wing.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and the GNFS says a full investigation will commence to establish what triggered the outbreak.
