The Local Governance Expert, Dr Frederick Oduro, has raised some concerns on how Ghanaian leaders have failed us in combating this menace galamsey. He also raised some concerns about how this menace is destroying our lands in the country.
In a conversation with Naa Dedei Tettey on Morning Starr, Dr Frederick Oduro mentioned that Ghanaians are not doing enough to help combat the menace galamsey. He added, “The issue galamsey is an existential threat to our very survival as a people and until we see it from this perspective, all that we are doing will be playing to the gallery and we are not tackling these issues from the root”.
Dr Frederick Oduro continued by expressing his disappointment with the performance on how Ghanaian leaders are combating the menace, saying, “I think we failed ourselves as a people”. He added, “As a people we’ve failed ourselves woefully from the National Level to the Local level, our Chiefs have failed us, our Political Leaders (Regional Ministers and District Chief Executives) have failed us, the Politicians from both political desires have failed us”.
Dr. Frederick Oduro went ahead to talk about the national institutions that have failed us saying, “The national institutions have failed us”. He then added, “The police have been compromised and the military have been compromised. Every institution that has anything to do with fighting this menace has failed”.
Dr. Frederick Oduro also noted the huge damages of Galamsey and he expressed his disappointment in the president. He said, “Galamsey is doing a huge damage. It is affecting our health, our economy, a sector like agriculture. It is destroying our water bodies. About his disappointment, he said, “I put the biggest blame on the president”. Then he added, “Where is the pledge from the president that he will put his presidency on line if we can fight this menace?”
“We have to resit. We can’t throw our hands in the air and say it’s over. He said “We must find solution to the problem,” The Local Governance Expert concluded.
