The Ghana Education Service (GES) convened an emergency meeting on Monday, February 23, 2026, to address escalating incidents of violence during inter-school sports competitions in the Central Region.
The move follows clashes involving students from several Senior High Schools, including Aggrey Memorial SHS, Adisadel College, Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS), Obrachire SHTS, and Kwanyako SHTS, during recent zonal athletics events.
Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, Director-General of GES, led the meeting, joined by the Central Regional Director of Education, Dr. Juliette Dufie Otami, district directors, school heads, zonal sports coordinators, affected students, and parents.
Prof. George K.T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Minister for Education, was also in attendance.
Eyewitness reports and official accounts were presented, detailing the causes and immediate responses to the clashes. “Such conduct undermines the values of discipline, sportsmanship, and mutual respect that school competitions are meant to promote,” Prof. Davis said.
The GES leadership endorsed the Central Regional Director’s decision to suspend all inter-school sporting activities until investigations are completed. Authorities confirmed that all students involved in assaults have been arrested and are cooperating with the police, while those who were injured have received medical care and are recovering.
Prof. Davis emphasized the dual role of school sports: “Games are not only about competition—they are platforms to discover and nurture talent, while promoting unity among schools. Students with passion and talent must be guided to build successful careers in sports.”
He further warned that any student found guilty of violence would face sanctions in line with Ghanaian law and GES regulations.
This meeting comes after rising concerns over student indiscipline during athletic competitions, highlighting the need for stronger safety measures and oversight in school sports programs.
