Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced it will resume controlled spillage from the Weija Dam starting Wednesday, 9 September 2026, after heavy rains pushed water levels to 45.2 feet, just short of the 46-foot operational threshold.
GWL said in a press release that the rise follows heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall across the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.
The company described the planned spillage as a precautionary measure to protect the integrity of the dam.
Residents living downstream have been advised to evacuate the area ahead of any eventuality. GWL urged them to remain alert, comply with official evacuation directives, and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.
The company has also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other stakeholders to implement necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.
Communities expected to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding settlements.
“GWL is closely watching the situation and will continue to provide updates. The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” the statement said.
