The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured that the ongoing nationwide upgrade of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformers will not result in higher electricity tariffs for consumers.
He said the initiative forms part of government’s broader “reset agenda” aimed at improving efficiency and ensuring a more stable power supply, rather than generating profit.

Dr. Jinapor gave the assurance after inspecting newly installed transformers at the Nmai Dzorn Substation in the Adentan Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The nationwide programme involves the installation of about 1,500 transformers to address network overloads and reduce power interruptions across the country.
He explained that once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve electricity reliability and support economic activity.

According to him, “no costs would be transferred to consumers” despite the scale of investment involved.
On the issue of Electricity Company of Ghana reform, the Minister reiterated government’s commitment to private sector participation in the power distribution sector.
He added that stakeholders are free to contribute ideas to ensure effective implementation of the policy.

Dr. Jinapor also cautioned ECG management to improve performance, stressing that staff who fail to meet key performance targets would face sanctions, including dismissal where necessary.
