Acting Chief of the Begoro Traditional area Osabarima Bosompem Ayirepe II says future governments must continue the Green Ghana project to help replenish lost forest cover of the country.
According to the Chief, the initiative is laudable and timely given that the world is battling effect of climate change with its concomitant effect on food security.
He therefore encouraged that the program is sustained for at least ten consecutive years for millions of trees to be planted nationwide and nurtured through collaborative mechanism with various institutions.
“The tree planting program is going to green Ghana. my suggestion is that the Forestry commission , Education Ministry of Agric,and traditional authority should institute monitoring mechanism for the trees planted.
“Again, this Green Ghana project must be sustained and continue by all subsequent governments if we are able to continuously plant trees for 10 consecutive years our depleted forest reserves and vegetation covers will be replenished,” said Osabarima Bosompem Ayirepe II.
The Chief said this when he joined the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Ghana Education Service, and the Fanteakwa North District Assembly to begin planting of 400,000 trees in the district as part of the Green Ghana Day observed on June 10 every year.
The ceremonial tree planting for this year in the district was held in Begoro Presbyterian Senior High School on Friday.
The Chief encouraged every household in the traditional area to plant trees and nurture same to help restore the lost vegetation in the area.
The District Chief Executive for Fanteakwa North, Charles Tweneboah Oware said the assembly will continue to deepen collaboration with stakeholders to continue the tree planting exercise throughout the year and ensure effective monitoring of its survival .
The Begoro District Forestry Manager Amankwah Omane was impressed with the growth of trees planted last year stating that the survival rate in the district was 85%.
He said , Green clubs will be formed in schools to whip up tree planting consciousness among children and the youth to help sustain conservation and environmental Stewardship mindset .
Meanwhile , about 3.7 million tree seedlings have been raised by the Forestry commission in Eastern Region for planting across the region this year as part of the Green Ghana Tree Planting .
He said this year’s Green Ghana exercise is focusing on restoring the country’s forestry, for which reason most of the trees will be planted in forest reserves particularly areas depleted by illegal mining
