Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL), in service of its ambition to build thriving communities across the country, has extended its flagship Water of Life (WoL) programme to the Suhum municipality of the Eastern Region.

The total beverage company together with its partners Jaldhaara Foundation and WaterHealth Ghana, commissioned an ultra-modern small town water facility which will provide safe and reliable drinking water to over 40,000 beneficiaries in the municipality and environs.

At a ceremony to officially commission the facility, Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Mr. Michael Gyato commended Guinness Ghana and partners for the project in Suhum.

He added that, “Given the importance of water for preserving health and supporting balanced economic development, the project will contribute to the constant supply of potable water and enhancing sanitation in the Suhum municipality.

Mr. Gyato indicated that one of Government’s top priority is to ensure development of water infrastructure across the country to provide safe drinking water to citizens in an equitable way.

Speaking at the launch, Managing Director for GGBL, Gavin Pike said GGBL a subsidiary of Diageo Plc, regarded the sustainable access to clean drinking water and sanitation as the bedrock for building strong and thriving communities across its operational areas.

“The human right to water is indispensable for leading a healthy life in human dignity. It is a pre-requisite to the realization of the socio-economic well-being of communities. Over the past decade, we have directly invested in over 12 water delivery systems in communities across the country with a goal is to equip these communities with the resources to build a better future”, he added.

Mr. Pike called on the municipality to ensure the facility served the people of Suhum and its environs for years to come by safeguarding and patronizing it.

Gabriel Opoku-Asare, Corporate Relations Director at GGBL further underscored Guinness Ghana’s commitment to the provision of water to communities where it sources local raw materials; adding, “we believe that sustainable access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is central to meeting global development goals on poverty, health, education and economic growth.”

Some residents who attended the commissioning ceremony thanked Guinness Ghana for siting the project in their municipality, as it would bring relief to Suhum and adjoining communities, who are often at the mercy of acute water shortages.
