Gushegu: Health delivery in danger as doctors fight for power

An escalating power struggle between two doctors at the Gushegu Hospital in the Northern region is affecting health delivery.

Two doctors, Dr. Sayibu and Dr. Barhama are embroiled in a dispute over the position of medical superintendent of the hospital with the health director taking sides.

The hospital dispute broke into the open earlier last week in an angry confrontation that halted health delivery for many hours.

Starr News has gathered that Dr. Sayibu was holding the position before he delegated it to Dr. Barhama to pursue higher learning.

He was reposted to the hospital after completion but his position had been manoeuvred by his delegate, who has refused to handover.

Dr. Barhama has taken up the office of the medical superintendent and upon hearing the return of Dr. Sayibu, allegedly locked up the office and fled with the official vehicle.

He has also allegedly locked up the bungalow for the medical superintendent and refused to hand over the keys to Dr. Sayibu who returned last Wednesday to resume duty.

It is not very clear why Dr. Barhama won’t relinquish power but sources told Starr News he is being firmly supported by the Health Director.

Alhaji Yakubu in his support for Dr. Barhama seized the official vehicle for the medical superintendent and gave out his vehicle to Barhama.

The Nissan Pick-up vehicle with registration number 2948-14 has since allegedly been in the custody of the health director whose efforts are said to be lightening the impasse.

The District Director, Alhaji Abdul Rahman Yakubu Bangbeibu has declined comment after earlier pledge to speak publicly.

He has, however, refused to return numerous calls and messages seeking response on the

He did not deny the widening impasse and its effects on service delivery at the hospital when contacted by StarrNews.

The Gushegu hospital serves thousands of residents in the Eastern corridor part of the Northern region.  It is faced with several challenges including lack of consumables and other basic drugs.

Doctors transfer cases due to lack of gloves for surgery.
