The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu has reiterated the government’s firm commitment to establishing the Ghana Defence University, assuring the Military High Command that deliberate and strategic actions are underway to bring the project to fruition.
During a site inspection of the proposed location, the Minister revealed that the government, through the Ghana Education Trust Fund is finalising arrangements to secure sustainable financing and deliver the essential infrastructure needed for the university’s take-off.
He disclosed that GH¢25 million has been set aside as seed funding under the 2026 GETFund formula to support the initial phase of the project.
Mr. Iddrisu further indicated that steps are being taken to establish the appropriate legal framework for the institution. He noted ongoing collaboration with the Office of the Attorney-General to finalise a draft bill for submission to Parliament for consideration and approval.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, the Education Minister described the Ghana Armed Forces as a symbol of discipline and professionalism. “If there is any institution of the state that still holds the highest standards of professionalism, it is our military,” he stated.
He also proposed broadening the university’s academic focus to incorporate emerging disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, stressing the need to align military training with evolving technological advancements and global security dynamics.
The Minister was joined on the inspection tour by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi who praised his leadership and proactive efforts in advancing the Ghana Defence University project.
Also addressing the gathering, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, outlined the wider impact of the proposed institution. He noted that the university will not only serve the Ghana Armed Forces but will also provide professional training for other security agencies, including the Police Service, Prisons Service, and allied institutions within Ghana and across neighbouring countries.
Once operational, the Ghana Defence University is expected to emerge as a centre of excellence in military education, research, and strategic training, contributing significantly to national development, regional cooperation and strengthened security capacity.
