Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed worry about attempts by some opposition politicians to call him out over his endorsement of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The two-term ex-president said he was speaking up because he wants what is best for the country’s socio-economic progress.
“These days they are using the word ‘statesman’ all over the place. In your elderly ages, that is when you are very knowledgeable and experienced but when an issue arises and I decide to weigh in, people disapprove. ‘You are a statesman, you don’t have to be involved’,” he said in an engagement with the NPP Vice-Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
Mr. Kufuor also used the occasion to tout Dr. Bawumia as the candidate who can formulate and implement policies that will inure to the benefit of the country.
He recalled that the NPP flag bear played a key in the HIPC (Highly Indepted Poor Countries) program that led to Ghana’s debt forgiveness.
Former President Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Bawumia generated a slew of criticisms from many political opponents including his former Trade Minister who now leads the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen.
Following the endorsement, Mr. Kyerematen said by backing Dr. Bawumia, former President Kufuor “has created a big blot on his political career”.
