The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch), Kofi Asare, has warned that the widening gap between the number of qualified teachers and available government postings is fueling a high risk of corruption within the recruitment process.
Speaking on GhOne TV’s GhToday on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Asare argued that when the demand for jobs far outstrips supply, the system becomes vulnerable to several unethical practices
”When you have too many qualified people chasing fewer job opportunities, it naturally increases the risk of corruption,” Asare explained.
He made this comment while reacting to recent reports of technical glitches and the suspiciously short opening of the Ghana Education Service (GES) recruitment portal.
The 2026 teacher recruitment portal, which was opened by the GES on April 10, 2026, was closed after the GES received over 40,000 applications for only 7,000 available positions.
The overwhelming response accounted for the early closure of the portal.
This glitch, Asare maintained, ought to be checked if the country wants to get the best out of the recruitment process.
