Four persons believed to be land guards have been remanded into custody by the Kaneshie District Magistrate Court presided over by Ama Adomako-Kwakye.
The four; Abdul Razak Mohammed, Suleman Mohammed, Abdul Yussif and Musa Muhammed are accused of destroying the property of a UK based Ghanaian at Tse-Addo in Accra. Using a bulldozer the suspects pulled down the fence wall among other things located on the said land.
This is contrary to the Vigilantism and related offences Act 2019 which proscribed activities of land guards. The suspects were arrested by the anti-land guard unit of the Greater Accra Police Command and later arraigned. The charges levelled against the four by prosecutor Inspector Amoah Richard were Causing unlawful damage contrary to section 172 (2) of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 and Conspiracy to commit crime to causing (unlawful damage: contrary to section 24 (1) and 172 (2) of the Criminal Offence Act 1960.
There are questions why the suspects were not changed under the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act 2019 which carries stiffer punishments for land guard activities.
The presiding magistrate Ama Adomako-Kwakye remanded the suspects for 18 days last week.
The suspects have however since been granted bail upon application from their lawyer Dr. Emmanuel Maurice Ankrah.
The suspects have been asked to report to the police every Thursday fortnightly after securing 20,000 cedis bail with 2 sureties.
The case was originally adjourned to 15th June 2021.
