The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected power to the New Kejetia Market in Kumasi for the second time this year, citing an outstanding debt of over GH¢7 million.
Despite a previous agreement to clear the arrears, market management has failed to meet the payment terms, prompting ECG to take action.
The disconnection has left thousands of traders without electricity, relying on generators to keep their businesses running. However, market management describes this solution as unsustainable and is calling for intervention from the Local Government Ministry to resolve the issue.
Managing Director Edmond Kofi Duffuor expressed his frustration,”From a total of 9.7 million Ghana cedis as of June, we have paid about 1.7 million Ghana cedis. So why should we be in darkness when we are committed? I’m not paying any other service provider any money. No other person is receiving money from Kejetia Market apart from ECG,” Duffuor said.
The power cut is expected to have a significant impact on traders, potentially leading to spoilage of perishable goods and loss of business. Traders are urging the government to intervene to ensure a stable electricity supply and prevent further disruptions to their livelihoods.
