The government has launched a full investigation into a deadly explosion in Hamile in the Upper West Region that left at least three people dead, including a Ghana Immigration Service officer and left several others injured.
Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed told Parliament on Tuesday that it remains too early to determine the precise cause of the blast.
He however confirmed that security agencies are working to restore order after chaos erupted in the town.
According to the Ghana Immigration Service, the explosion occurred during a border patrol operation when officers intercepted a tricycle carrying a load suspected to contain explosives.
The rider allegedly attempted to flee as officers moved in to inspect the cargo, triggering the blast.
The explosion killed the rider and one immigration officer on the spot. A second officer sustained injuries and is receiving treatment.
“The Ghana Immigration Service will communicate further developments as more verified information becomes available.
“Whilst investigations continue, the security agencies will continue working with relevant security agencies to ensure that the circumstances of these unfortunate incidents are thoroughly examined and that any necessary measures arising from findings are duly considered,” he told Parliament.
In the aftermath of the explosion and the resulting deaths, tensions in Hamile escalated sharply. Residents reportedly went on the rampage, attacking offices and state security facilities.
In response, the government imposed an immediate curfew on Hamile Township and surrounding communities in the Lambussie District.
The restriction runs daily from 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. It includes a total ban on the possession of firearms, ammunition and other offensive weapons. Authorities said the measure is intended to restrict unnecessary movement, facilitate security operations and create conditions for agencies to carry out their duties effectively.
“I want to make a passionate appeal to the chiefs, elders and opinion leaders in Hamile and its environs to continue to talk to the youth and exercise restraint to enable cool heads to prevail,” he said. He extended the government’s sympathies to the family, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officer, and wished the injured officer a full recovery.
“We assure the family of both officers that their sacrifices and service to our country are deeply valued.”
