‘No arrest, no school’ – GNAT demands justice for assaulted teacher

GNAT gives police ultimatum: No arrests, no school as teachers demand justice for brutal attack during mock examination

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has warned that its members within the Adenta Municipality in the Greater Accra Region will not resume duty for the upcoming school term unless the perpetrators of a recent violent assault on a teacher are arrested and prosecuted.

The Madina-Adenta-Abokobi Secretariat of GNAT in a formal petition addressed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) District Director, expressed “serious concern” over a worrying trend of physical violence against educators in the region.

According to the petition, the latest incident occurred on April 8, 2026, at Bethel Presby Junior High School where a teacher, Mr. Mohammed Abdela, whiles invigilating a mock examination discovered a former student, identified as Aaron Mensah, was allegedly tampering with pupils’ bags in a classroom.

When Mr. Abdela confronted the intruder and asked him to leave, the former student reportedly issued a threat before departing.

“True to his threat, the former student later returned with a group of young men on motorbikes and assaulted Mr. Abdela,” the statement revealed.

The teacher was saved from further harm by the timely intervention of a colleague and was subsequently rushed to the East Legon Police Station to lodge a complaint.

According to GNAT, no arrests have been made as at Friday, April 17, despite providing medical reports and intelligence to the police; an “apparent delay and inaction” which GNAT said poses significant threat to the safety of teachers.

GNAT has therefore demanded the prompt apprehension of Aaron Mensah and his accomplices, swift legal action to serve as a deterrent against future attacks and decisive measures from the Adenta Municipal Assembly and Police Command to secure school premises.

The letter signed by the District Secretary explicitly stated that teachers in the Adenta Municipality will not return to the classroom when schools reopen for the new term if the culprits remain at large.

“GNAT will not compromise on the safety of its members,” the association declared, citing a previous court ruling on March 30, 2026, involving students from Frafraha SHS as evidence that violence against teachers is reaching a crisis point.

The petition has been copied to the Regional Secretary of GNAT, the Adenta Municipal Chief Executive, and the East Legon Police Division Commander.
