NPP picks 1, NDC takes 8th position on ballot for December 7 polls

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has picked the number one position on the ballot paper for the upcoming December 7 general elections, while the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will occupy the eighth spot.

This was after the balloting process was conducted at the Electoral Commission’s office in Accra on Friday, September 20, 2024. This is after the Commission cleared 13 candidates for the election and disqualified 11 others.

Here is the full list of the ballot positions:

  1. Mahamudu Bawumia – NPP
  2. Daniel Augustus Lartey – GCPP
  3. Akua Donkor – Ghana Freedom Party
  4. Christian Kwabena Andrews – GUM
  5. Kofi Akpaloo – Liberal Party of Ghana
  6. Mohammed Frimpong – National Democratic Party
  7. Nana Akosua Frimpomaa – CPP
  8. John Dramani Mahama – NDC
  9. Hassan Abdulai Ayariga – All People’s Congress
  10. Kofi Koranteng – Independent Candidate
  11. George Twum-Barima-Adu – Independent Candidate
  12. Nana Kwame Bediako – Independent Candidate
  13. Alan John Kyerematen – Independent Candidate

However, the balloting process was not without controversy. After the first round of selections to determine the order of the balloting, the Director of Elections for the NDC, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, raised concerns over an irregularity with one of the balls used in the process, claiming it had a unique feature that could undermine the fairness of the process.

This claim was strongly challenged by Evans Nimako, the NPP’s National Director of Research and Elections. After about 30 minutes of back and forth, the EC agreed to replace the questionable ball and restarted the balloting process from scratch.

Earlier at a press conference, the EC Chair, Jean Mensa noted that several presidential aspirants had been disqualified from participating in the December 7, 2024, elections due to their failure to correct errors on their nomination forms.

She also added that despite being given ample time to address the issues, the disqualified candidates were unable to correct their anomalies.

Among those disqualified are Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Janet Nabla of the People’s National Party (PNP) and Independent Presidential Aspirant, Dr Sam Ankrah.
