Former Adansi Asokwa MP K.T. Hammond has criticized attempts by some personalities within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to turn the party’s 2026 presidential primaries into a contest of the richest.
His remarks follow recent criticisms of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by party figures Bryan Acheampong and Kennedy Agyapong.
Speaking during Bawumia’s campaign tour in the Ashanti Region on September 10, Hammond appealed for unity within the party, warning against reducing leadership contests to displays of personal wealth.
“I’m part of the poor, the poor that Abronye and Bawumia are in, I support Bawumia. Where were the rich people when we were struggling to get money to establish the NPP in the 1990s? Where were the rich folks before the NPP won its first election? During the 2000 election, we had nothing. Some of us who supported the party don’t brag. We fought for this party with our blood and sweat. Some of us who supported the party then, do you see us talking?
“This behaviour of the rich distancing themselves from the poor must cease. The innuendos must cease, and disunity must stop,” he added.
Hammond emphasized that unity, discipline, and adherence to the party’s founding values are essential for the NPP’s success, both in the upcoming 2026 flagbearer primaries and the general elections.
He urged all aspirants to focus on leadership qualities and service rather than financial might, reminding members that the party’s foundation was built on struggle, commitment, and shared sacrifices.
The 2026 NPP presidential primaries are set to take place in January, with several aspirants expected to contest for the party’s flagbearer position.
