The largest opposition party, New Patriotic Party (NPP), has slammed the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and its head, Kissi Agyebeng, for describing former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive.
This follows accusations by the OSP that the former Minister, who is said to be undergoing medical treatment outside the country, caused financial loss to the state through various transactions, including the controversial construction of the National Cathedral and the Ghana Revenue Authority’s partnership with Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd.
The Special Prosecutor also dismissed reports that armed uniformed men stormed the residence of the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, as staged.
Speaking to Starr News, the NPP’s Director of Communication, Richard Ahiagbah, said the OSP’s stance represents an anomaly in the country’s governance system.
“The John Mahama administration is in charge of the country. As for the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, I’m not sure if he is still in office, but he seems unconcerned about some of the issues happening. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the John Mahama administration. It is their duty to ensure that there is law and order in our country. He inherited a peaceful country, one governed by law. This issue must be pursued and addressed.”
“The Special Prosecutor’s statement was an anomaly and inconsistent with the law. Ken Ofori-Atta is not a fugitive. He is available to answer any questions, though he is currently out of the country with notice given to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, for medical attention. We must respect his human rights and stop the abuse of office.”
