The People’s National Convention (PNC) has consoled victims of Saturday’s gas explosion at the Atomic Junction in Accra.

At least seven people have lost their lives in the explosion with dozens receiving treatment at various medical centres in Accra.

The PNC is calling for “appropriate sanctions” on those whose actions may have led to the explosion.

“We are in addition, calling for an appropriate sanctions on any individual and agencies, both private and governmental, if findings should prove that someone did not do what he or she is being paid to do,” a statement signed by its Director of communication Emmanuel Wilson Jnr said.

Below is the full statement:

The People’s National Convention with a heavy heart, consoles with affected persons and the families of the 07.10.2017 Gas Explosion at Atomic Junction.

We wish those currently receiving treatment, a speedy recovery, and God’s strength to the families of the lives that the nation has lost. The PNC is however shocked and disappointed that once again, Ghana has recorded such an unfortunate, preventable incident.

It is clear that as a nation, we did not learn much from such past occurrences. As a party, we are calling on H.E. Nana Addo’s government, to as a matter of urgency, find the root cause of this unfortunate incident, so to ensure that it does not recur anywhere in Ghana.

We are in addition, calling for an appropriate sanctions on any individual and agencies, both private and governmental, if findings should prove that someone did not do what he or she is being paid to do.

Also, the People’s National Convention is calling on the relevant authorities and agencies to ensure that they are applying standard procedures in giving out permits and are having a periodic monitoring on such installations.

We further call on the government to charge and strengthen, by giving the necessary resources, to the appropriate state organisations to as a matter of urgency create a strong public awareness and also sensitise the citizens on how to conduct themselves, in matters of emergencies such as this unfortunate situation.

Finally, the PNC is calling on the entire nation to begin to elevate the value that we place on the lives of our citizens. Once again, our deepest of condolence to all affected.

Comradely yours, Emmanuel Wilson Jnr Director of communication
