The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, Eastern Region has launched its newly established Innovation and Incubation Hub, aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable development to reduce unemployment among the university’s graduates and beyond.
The University has appointed Dr. Kwaku Adu, a Lecturer with the Department of Applied Economics as Coordinator for the Hub with responsibility of providing strategic academic leadership, forging industry partnership, mobilizing resources for research and innovation projects.
Supporting him is Ms. Cynthia Oduro Ameyaa, and Mr. Ohene Kwasi Tuffuor as Hub Manager and Administrator, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) officer respectively.
In addition, the University has also appointed Mr. Kingsley Adomako as Administrative Support Staff, to provide clerical and operational support for the smooth running of the Hub.
Ghana continue to grapple with high unemployment rate which alarmingly surged to 14.7 percent in the first quarter of 2023.
According to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) quarterly labour force statistics for the first three quarters of 2023, approximately 22.3 per cent (4,565) and 48.8(9,987) per cent of individuals who faced unemployment had completed tertiary and Secondary levels of education respectively.
According to UESD, the establishment of the Hub forms part of the university’s vision of addressing problem of unemployment through nurturing innovation, empowering students to start their own businesses and enterprises, and build strong industry partnerships to sharpen the employability skills of students in the broader environmental ecosystem.
