United Party to rescue Ghanaians from NPP and NDC – Buaben Asamoa

United Party General Secretary Yaw Buaben Asamoa says the party was formed to offer Ghanaians real choice, breaking away from the country’s predictable two-party system.

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, General Secretary of the United Party, has explained that the party’s formation stemmed from a desire to offer Ghanaians a real choice beyond the traditional two-party system.

Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Asamoa argued that governance cannot be reduced to fixed formulas, and no single system of government is universally right or wrong.

“Nobody is right or wrong. Governance is not black or white,” he said. “Every country has its own democracy. British democracy is not the same as American democracy, and even within Europe, democracies differ from country to country.”

He emphasized that while democratic structures may vary, their legitimacy comes from the ability of citizens to exercise meaningful choice.

“The essential thing is that you must have choice,” Asamoa said. “That choice must allow people to express themselves with the hope that they can influence events, whether from the majority or the minority.”

According to him, the United Party emerged as a response to Ghana’s predictable political cycle. “Some people are comfortable with what exists, and that’s fine. But what we had was a revolving door; one party in, one party out. We decided to break out of that door,” he explained.

Asamoa further revealed that the party initially started as a movement, which revealed strong public demand for an alternative to the dominant parties.

“We ran as a movement and realised there was a real hunger for an alternative,” he said. “The next question was how that alternative could gain authority, gravitas, and become a catalyst strong enough to draw people away from the two traditional parties.”

This insight, he said, paved the way for the movement’s transformation into a fully-fledged political party, aiming to compete for power and reshape Ghana’s political landscape.
