V/R: Dafeamekpor hands 60 outboard motors to fishermen in his constituency

The Member of Parliament for the South Dayi constituency in the Volta region, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor has handed over some sixty (60) outboard motors to some fishermen in his constituency on high purchase.

Each beneficiary is expected to pay an amount of GHS1,000 monthly to clear off the total cost.

The initiative according to the MP is to support the fisherfolk to have access to the outboard motors under a social intervention programme rolled out by government.

Under the programme which is being spearheaded by the Ministry for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the fishermen are expected to pay a subsidised fee of GHS12,000 for each of the outboard motors.

“The government subsidy covers about half of the total cost of the machine. Even with the subsidy by government, it is hard for the people to afford. That is why I have guaranteed for the people to pay a lesser sum by way of deposit so that when they have access to the machine, they can on monthly basis pay off the outstanding,” he said.

At a short ceremony held at Tongor-Dzemeni in the South Dayi district, where the machines were handed over to the beneficiaries, Headman for the community, Togbe Tukata, called on government to fix the Kpeve-Dzemeni and the Asikuma-Dzemeni roads to aid in the transport of fish and traders.

He said, the current nature of these roads continues to negatively affect business in the area.

He further called on the Ghana Police Service to position more patrol teams on the roads to reduce robbery activities in the area.

“Armed robbery is on the rise on some parts of our roads. When the armed robbers meet our wives and they don’t have money, they beat them up,” Togbe lamented.
