Government has turned its attention to the police service as part of the effort to curb the spread of covid-19.
All police posts in the sixteen regions of the country are currently undergoing disinfection spearheaded by Zoomlion Ghana.
Addressing the media during the kickstart of the initiative, in the Ashanti Region, Regional Commander COP Kwasi Mensah Duku said the move was much needed as it will protect members of the force as well as the public.
According to him, the exercise will be frequently conducted as persons from all over the region and beyond visit their offices on a daily basis.
Also, the fact that police officers have been specially tasked to ensure compliance to covid protocols means that they are equally at risk of contracting and spreading the virus.
He noted “we see a lot of people here coming in, coming out, moving in and going out from our premises. We do not know those who are carrying the disease so it is good. At least periodically it should be done.”
Meanwhile, Public Jobs Manager for Zoomlion Ghana in the Ashanti-East sector Benedict Awuah said the exercise has been extended to cover MMDAs in the region.
He, therefore, appealed to various local authorities to cooperate with teams that visit in order to ensure the success of the exercise.
“Basically we are looking at disinfecting 84 facilities across the Ashanti-east. It covers places like Kwabre East, Afigya Kwabre north and south, Mampong, and the Eastern Part of the Ashanti region. All the MMDAs that fall into the eastern part of the region will be disinfected,” he indicated.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has suspended sitting for three weeks following a number of covid-19 cases recorded in the Chamber.
Starr FM’s Parliamentary correspondent, Ibrahim Alhassan, reports that the decision to suspend parliament comes after 17 MPs and 151 staff tested positive for the disease.
