Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to voter apathy within its own ranks, insisting that it was not the strength of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that caused their downfall.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks come as part of his broader campaign message to rebuild trust, restore unity, and reenergize the party’s base as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
Speaking at the launch of his “Our Journey Together” campaign in the Sene East Constituency on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Dr. Bawumia said statistics from the Electoral Commission showed that over 2.1 million NPP supporters who voted in the 2020 elections stayed away from the polls in 2024.
“NPP’s votes went down. About 2.1 million people who voted for us in 2020 did not vote in 2024. These were NPP members — we simply didn’t vote,” he revealed.
He stressed that the NPP would have retained power if its members had turned out to vote, explaining that President John Mahama’s victory margin of 1.7 million votes could have been easily overturned by those missing NPP voters.
“John Mahama secured victory with 1.7 million votes. If our 2.1 million members had turned out, we would have won. That is why I said it wasn’t the NDC that won the election — it was the NPP that lost it,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia noted that internal divisions, disunity, and voter fatigue were key factors that discouraged the party’s grassroots supporters from participating in the polls. He urged members to close ranks and rebuild confidence ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“So, I am confident that, by the grace of God, if we resolve our internal issues and go out to vote, we will win the next election,” he said.
The 2024 elections ended the NPP’s eight-year hold on power, with the party’s presidential votes dropping from 6.7 million in 2020 to 4,877,611, while the NDC’s tally increased from 6.2 million to 6,591,790 — a gain of nearly 400,000 votes.
Political analysts say the results reflect economic mismanagement and poor leadership under the previous NPP government.
