A deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Pius Enam Hadzide feels his outfit was modest in spending over GHC 100,000 to rename the Tamale Sports Stadium after late vice president Aliu Mahama.
According to Hadzide, the lump sum for the ceremony included the organisation of keep fit sessions and ceremonial football match between the Southern and Northern select sides of which the former won by 2-1 to lift the trophy.
Hadzide rubbished claims that the CEO of McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McCauley was the sole financier of the rechristening of the national edifice.
“Late Aliu Mahama paid his due to the development of Sports and even in the construction of the former Tamale Sports Stadium, now Aliu Mahama Stadium.
“So there were a series of activities that were organised to honor the hero. Organizational cost, the Trophy, beyond the trophy GHC50, 000 was at stake as the cash prize but we were very modest in our expenditure,” he told Starr Sports.
The late Aliu Mahama was one of the founding fathers of Real Tamale United, a once powerful Ghana Premier League side now wallowing in Division II.
