NPP leadership urged to work to protect existing parliamentary seats

Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, Afigya-Kwabre South constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appealed to the leadership of the party to design effective and pragmatic mechanisms that would protect the current parliamentary seats of the party.

He said the party should not allow blanket competition in the upcoming parliamentary primaries to ensure that experienced Members of Parliament (MPs) were protected and maintained for the 2020 elections.

Speaking at the inauguration of the constituency polling station youth organizers at Kodie, he said the party needed the experience and expertise of its existing MPs to ensure a resounding victory in the 2010 elections.

The event was held under the theme: “Agenda 47/47 in Ashanti, the role of polling station youth organizers”.

Odeneho Appiah said the party should not repeat past experiences where unbridled competition in the parliamentary primaries of the party created divisions and unnecessary tension in some constituencies resulting in the loss of those seats.

Reflecting on the theme for the inauguration, he said the party would be able to wrestle parliamentary seats from its opponents, only when there was peace, unity and certainty among members in the existing constituencies that they could comfortably maintain those seats.

Odeneho Appiah urged government appointees and other party members who were interested to contest in the existing parliamentary seats of the party to be cautious in their actions since that could create confusion and unnecessary tension which could create problems for the party in the 2020 elections.

He urged the youth not to allow themselves to be influenced by money and other material things to change their existing MPs, adding that, they should rather, support their MPs to work for the good of all the people in the constituency.

The chairman said the party needed men of great experience to remain in parliament to support government to deliver on its promises and appealed to the youth not to allow themselves to be manipulated to change their existing MPs.

Mr Francis Adomako, Ashanti Regional Organizer of NPP, said there is the need for the youth to rise up and support their MPs and constituency executives to work to retain power for the party.

He said though the government was doing well in all aspects of governance, especially in the introduction and implementation of various social intervention programmes, these alone could not guarantee a win for the party in the 2020 elections.

Mr Adomako said the NDC has set in motion strong propaganda mechanism to discredit the government in the 2020 elections and there is the need for the youth, who are the backbone of the party to open their eyes and device effective strategies to counter those attacks, adding that “you should not take NDC for granted”.

Madam Beatrice Owusu, former constituency women’s organizer, said the party would be able to retain power, only when the youth worked harder and in unity with all other key stakeholders, to win more souls for the party.
