Two families of the three Takoradi missing girls have backtracked on their stance not to allow the police take samples for DNA tests on some discovered bodies at the premises of the kidnap suspect.
The Bentum and Korankye families have given the green light for the samples to be taken, spokesperson of the families Michael Grant Hayford revealed to Morning Starr host Francis Abban on Thursday.
“We are in a country where we have to respect our elders and the rule of law. The result is what we are all looking out for,” he said.
However, he insisted the families believe the girls are still alive.
“We still believe the girls [discovered bodies] are not our loved ones,” Hayford stressed on Starr 103.5FM.
The three families had earlier mentioned they are not going to cooperate with the police for the DNA Test because they have lost confidence in the peace makers.
APPEALS
The Executive Director of Child Rights International, Mr. Bright Appiah, has appealed to the families of the three kidnapped girls in Takoradi to give access to the police to perform DNA tests on discovered bodies at the suspect’s premises.
The families on Monday said they have lost confidence in the Ghana Police Service. They are therefore calling for an independent body to conduct a DNA test on the discovered bodies believed to be their loved ones.
However, Mr. Appiah noted “we’ve gotten to a critical moment” of the investigations to determine whether the girls are alive or otherwise hence the families need to soften their stance.
“I’ll urge them to cooperate with the police,” Mr. Appiah appealed on Morning Starr with Francis Abban on Wednesday.
“We’ve gotten to the critical moment; it is either we know the children are alive or not. It is an opportunity for them to also do their own independent checks after the police report. I’ll urge them to cooperate,” he added.
The police, Mr. Appiah stated, “must have a good strategy to engage the families.”
He added: “The police should be socially-oriented and understand the make-up of the family and the feeling they are going through.”
Background
The missing girls are Priscilla Blessing Bentum, 21, last seen on August 17, 2018; 18-year-old Ruth Love Quayson, last seen on December 4, 2018, and 16-year-old Priscilla Mantebea Koranchie, last seen on December 21, 2018.
They were later confirmed to have been kidnapped after their kidnapper demanded a ransom.
A Nigerian, Samuel Udoetuk-Wills, 28, who was arrested as a prime suspect, has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for breaking jail, while the case is yet to be determined.
Latest discovery
The police last Friday exhumed some human remains within the premises where one of the suspected kidnapper Samuel Udeotuk-Wills resided.
“On Saturday 3rd August, 2019 Police held discussion with families of the three missing ladies in Takoradi to assist with DNA samples as part of the investigation and the families are cooperating with the Police in this endeavor,” a police statement said Monday.
A fourth set of remains, according to the police, was also discovered Tuesday.
However, the families said until “an independent body” carries out the DNA analysis they will not cooperate because the police have not been candid with them throughout the investigations.
“We are asking why the police keep distorting the information regarding the investigation,” a family spokesperson Michael Korankye said at a news conference Tuesday.
He added: “We are asking for an independent body” to conduct the DNA test.
The position of the families have been endorsed by a security expert Col. (rtd) Festus Aboagye, who believes the police have “compromised public trust” as far as the kidnapping case is concerned.
“And there is every reason for the family to ask for an independent check,” he noted.
“It doesn’t cost the police anything to invest the money to use for the DNA for a private firm to do the analysis,” Col. (rtd) Aboagye told Regina Borley Bortey during the Starr Mid-Day News Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the families of the missing girls say they do not believe that their relatives are dead.
Kate Quayeson, an elderly sister of Ruthlove Quayeson; the second girl who was kidnapped told Empire News’ Emmanuel Ohene-Gyan that they do not trust in the outcome of the operation carried out by the police describing it as a diversionary tactic.
Mr Francis Bentum, father of Priscilla Blessing Bentum the first girl to be kidnapped also told Ohene-Gyan that after visiting the crime scene Friday evening about 8:30pm after the Police left, he concluded that the human remains could not have been kept in the septic tank.
