The United Nations has called on the Ghana government to activate policies that deal with plastic pollution as it marks the 74th anniversary of the UN Charter with a beach cleanup exercise.
The staff of the United Nations in Ghana selected the Kumasamba La Bamba beach in Accra for the exercise.
The move is to sensitize communities about the negative effects of plastic pollutions and to keep the oceans clean to protect and preserve marine life.
Speaking to Starr News’ Daniel Nii Lartey, Project Engineer for the UNOPS, Hadiya Gariba said the government must do more than just formulating policies.
“We have the policies in place and we need it activated, we need it actioned. It is a challenge getting everybody on our side in dealing with plastics. If the government is not putting in policies to curb the use of these, once they are available, people would want to continuously utilize such services, government’s call is to ensure that these policies we have in place for waste management is implemented and most especially looking at the plastic waste menace we need to have policies on that and more action, not just the policy”.
The UN day has been observed since 1948. In Ghana, it also served as a way of contributing to the Secretary General’s efforts on climate change. Communications analyst for the UNDP, Praise Nutakor said the UN country representatives have embarked on a campaign to green all their offices and to avoid single-use plastics to mitigate the effects of plastics on climate change.
