Use marketers to turn around public sector unproductiveness – CIMG to Gov’t

The Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana CIMG is pushing for the introduction of marketing into all public sector organizations.

Speaking at the 34th CIMG National Marketing Performance Awards, CIMG President, Dr. Daniel Kasser-Tee says the move is pivotal in turning around the fortunes of State Owned Enterprises, many of which have largely been unproductive.

“Ghana has over the years been grappling with poor performing state-owned institutions. I have previously advocated for the appointment of Marketers, or at least people who understand the essence of marketing, at the helm of poorly performing organizations”, he bemoaned.

“History points us to the good work of the good old professor Stephen Adei and how he turned GIMPA around. We have had the cause to talk about the good work being done at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, where two different Vice-Chancellors, Prof. Joshua Alabi and our guest of honour for this evening, Prof. Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, have both won the prestigious Marketing Man of the Year at different times,” he added.

He is also making a case for the appointment of marketing-oriented persons to the helm of affairs of poorly performing organizations.

“It is for such reasons that the CIMG has begun discussions with the Public Services Commission for the possibility of introducing marketing into all Public Sector Organisations at the top level to promote the interest of customers”, he concluded.

On his part, Vice Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Professor Abednego Amartey is entreating government and the business community to embrace marketing in a bid to turn the country’s current economic woes around.

“I am appealing to the Government of Ghana; Members of Parliament; Public/Private Sector Practitioners; Captains of industry; Economic Experts, Business Managers and the entire Business Community to emerge from our economic challenges stronger than before, let us embrace marketing as a powerful instrument of change. By doing so, we can foster economic recovery, enhance the resilience of our economy and our businesses, and pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future Ghana,” he told the audience.
