The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it’s ready to join the nationwide strike action on Thursday, 10th October 2024 declared by Organized Labour.
Organized Labour is expected to embark on a nationwide strike scheduled for October 10, despite the government’s recently announced efforts to address the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Organized Labour has been advocating a more robust response to the illegal mining crisis, including calls for the president to declare a state of emergency and introduce long-term measures to combat the issue.
Speaking on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, the Deputy Industrial Relations Officer for GPRTU, Mr. Samuel Amoah said “I urge the regions to also send it down to all the branches that, on Thursday, no vehicle that belongs to GPRTU should move from the station. It means that all the stations are not going to work. And then we are advising our clients that’s our passengers that, this is not something that we are doing to punish them.”
Mr. Samuel also raises his concern about other groups not collaborating to go on strike. He said, “If we are together, we must come together. Except that maybe what the other party is doing is not something that will benefit the nation or benefit the union.”
He continued, “But we see this as something that will also benefit the union, and so, until the government voices out and sends a warning on the galamsey menace, we will go on strike. I think it will help the whole nation.”
Mr. Samuel concluded that “Organized Labor will determine the way forward on how long the strike will go.”
