Reverend Father Raymond Osei-Tutu, the Chancellor for the Archdiocese of Accra has suggested that the root cause of illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey’ lies in the irresponsibility of both the government and the citizens.
Speaking to GHOne TV’s Mary Asantewaa Buabeng, during the peaceful environmental prayer walk organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra recently to address the environmental damage caused by illegal mining (galamsey), Rev. Osei-Tutu stressed the need for Ghanaians to rise and speak against the destruction that is causing immense damage to the environment.
He added that illegal mining (Galamsey) is not the only problem; legal mining is done illegally as well.
He stated,” We have embarked on this prayer walk to bring awareness that the canker, the menace of environmental degradation that is besetting our country, it’s time for us to take the bull by the horns and all of us should rise, and speak against it and stop this menace. It goes against the very first commandment that God gave to mankind, that we should cultivate the earth. This is not how to do it.”
Rev. Osei-Tutu further identified irresponsibility on the side of the government and those being governed (citizens). He also suggested the need for transparency and a non-partisan approach to dealing with the menace.
“For all of us, irresponsibility, both by those who are in government and those of us who are being led, because sometimes those of us who are being led say to the government, you are doing well, but we know we are not doing so well, just because we want to look at it from the partisan side. Today’s work has nothing to nothing to do with the partisan action,” the reverend declared.
