The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament will not honour a recall by returning to transact business until after the December 7 election, the party’s leader, John Mahama has said.
He explained that in the crucial final lap of the campaign season, incumbent Members of Parliament seeking reelection could not afford to abandon the campaign trail for business in the House.
Mr. Mahama said the outstanding matters requiring attention could be addressed when it becomes clear that the NDC has won a commanding majority in the 9th Parliament.
“They said they won’t agree that we’re majority in Parliament. After the parliamentary results, it will be put beyond doubt. They have requested for a recall of Parliament. With twelve days to the election, they want us to suspend our campaigns and come to the House. They can go ahead. We as NDC won’t step foot in Parliament,” the former President said to cheers at a campaign rally.
Mr. Mahama comments come barely 24 hours after the leader of the NDC Caucus in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson wrote to Speaker Alban Bagbin, urging him to reject the New Patriotic Party side’s request for a recall.
He said the business itemized in Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s petition were not urgent and could wait until after the election on December 7.
On his part, Leader Afenyo-Markin insists that the outstanding business are urgent issues that needed lawmakers’ attention.
They include ratifications, consideration of judicial appointments and seventeen bills.
