Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the just ended election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has told party faithful that it was their party that gave away the election to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing party officers and supporters who had called on him from the Korle Klottey constituency, he observed that the party’s vote tally saw a dip as opposed to his opponent whose votes hovered around the previous year’s election total.
“I want to encourage you all to see that we handed this election over to the NDC. They didn’t win this outright. Their numbers didn’t change from 2020. Ours have dropped by 40% so the analysis is simple,” he told them at his residence.
The vice-president indicated that since the reason for the defeat was self inflicted, it was going to fall to them to unite and forge ahead to build a competitive party in 2028.
Acknowledging the disappoint and pain the NPP supporters were enduring, he said this was the time for soul searching and tolerance of one another’s views within the party.
The Electoral Commission in its declaration of the presidential election results noted that with 267 constituency results available, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Mahama polled 6,328,397 representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast. His main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) got 4,657,304 votes.
However, in the 2020 presidential election, the NPP led by President Akufo-Addo garnered about 6.7 million votes with former President Mahama earning a little over 6.2 million of the total valid votes cast.
Dr. Bawumia was indicating that his party had lost over 2 million votes in four years.
On Sunday morning, he called Mr. Mahama to congratulate him on his landslide victory, pledging his support for his return to Jubilee House.
